DECENTRALAND PART 4
So are you ready to dive in or are you still a bit skeptical about Decentraland and the metaverse? What’s important to know is that this is all real - there has already been a shift, it’s not going to happen - the shift has already occurred. Crypto, NFTs, Decentraland, and the metaverse along with digital currency, these things are already in circulation, and they’re not going anywhere anytime soon.
Decentraland is just as its name suggests, it is decentralized. Therefore it is not tied to anything or any one person anywhere, and even though it was started by 2 developers in 2015, it is now owned and run not by any single entity, but by the users.
It is divided into districts and there’s a lot to do there! World-famous Sotheby’s has a store there, located in the Voltaire Art District of Decentraland. You can visit, tour, or buy digital art there. You can go shopping for the latest crypto fashion for your avatar too! (Speaking of “avatar,” I need to clear something up. When I mention the word “avatar", I am not, I repeat … I am not referring to the reincarnation of the Hindu god avatar. I am referring to the cartoon-like version of yourself that is also available on Facebook and Snapchat. I’m pretty sure you’ve seen them around or you may even have one (or several!)
Avatars use clothing known as wearables that can be bought or sold on the blockchain in the form of NFTs. (You can find more info on NFT’s in the blogposts for the week of February 21, 2022). Wearable designers make a lot of money in the metaverse and I’m pretty sure that I could see the question rolling around in your mind, lol! “Sherma, why would I want to spend money to buy digital clothes for a digital avatar? I can’t touch the clothes, I can’t wear them, this is all online and a waste of money to me.”
I understand. I had those same thoughts too until I began to research the metaverse and the virtual life and I realized that even though it’s digital, it’s a virtual culture that’s growing and it means a lot to a whole lot of people (which is why it is so popular!) It is just as real as the people we don’t see but whom we know live underground among the subway tracks in New York City! Yep! Way beyond street level in NYC there are hidden tunnels and underground spaces where hundreds of people live in darkness.
But let’s get back to wearables:-) This is why designers of wearables make a lot of money… because people are buying the wearables to dress their avatars, it’s simple! There would not have been a market for wearables if no one wanted to buy them. Your avatar represents you, so what you’re wearing pretty much makes you who you are, much like it is in the real physical world. A company called Every Realm has even built a shopping mall in Decentraland and spent $10M to put some things in place to accommodate their shoppers! There are a number of new stores coming to that mall, (including a crypto pot-pie store, yikes!) Take a look below!
In the meantime, be safe out there! Sending peace, love, and happiness your way today!
