BECOMING SKILLED IN PRAYER
PRAYER IS A SKILL
Today we're talking about Prayer as a skill, something we learn by practicing. The way it works is that the more we pray the more we want to pray; the less we pray the less we want to pray. The more we practice the better we become at it; the better we become at it, the better our relationship is with Jesus!
It takes practice to consistently yield to the Spirit of God, it's something we have to keep up with. A couple of years ago I was praying in the Spirit in other tongues and the word YIELD came up out of my Spirit. I wrote it down and then found all the different meanings of the word YIELD, as well as all the different ways that I could YIELD to the Holy Spirit.
Here is what you're doing whenever you make the decision to YIELD to the Spirit of God. When you YIELD you are in essence:
Submitting yourself to the Holy Spirit in prayer, and you are also:
Surrendering your all to Him;
Humbling yourself before Him;
Giving yourself over to Him;
Giving way to Him;
Making way for Him;
Bowing before Him;
Bending before Him;
Deferring to Him;
Relinquishing control to Him;
Committing yourself to Him;
Entrusting yourself into His hands;
Acknowledging Him;
Giving consent to Him;
Standing up for Him;
Being accepting of Him;
Buckling up under Him;
Collapsing under Him;
Melting into Him;
Pressing into Him;
Leaning into Him;
Falling in line with Him; and
Flowing with the Holy Spirit
So determine in your hearts to always YIELD to the Holy Spirit during your prayer time. Let Him lead you where He wants to. What does that mean? It means that you sometimes have to be quiet instead of rattling off in machine gun tongues or mouthing off items on your prayer list.
Just get quiet on the inside and let Him lead you. It may be a scripture that comes to mind or a word, maybe a picture of something or someone, or maybe even a song. Whatever it is, you go with that. Sing the song, say the person's name that He is showing you, and find the scripture He is bringing to your mind; just let Him lead while you YIELD to whatever He is showing to you.
If at any time during prayer I realize that I can't find traction in prayer - when I'm not sure what direction to go in - I'll pull up those definitions of the word YIELD, and I'll say them out loud to Him! I'll say, "Holy Spirit, I am yielding to You right now, I make room for you, I am pressing into you and melting into you. I relinquish all control right now and I surrender and submit myself to You."
Without fail, His presence begins to manifest. Sometimes slowly at first, but He comes! He loves it when we love on Him. He loves it when we pray. Practice the skill of prayer, and practice YIELDING. I promise you, you'll have greater results in your prayers!
